A Gothic Moment

I would consider "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Samuel Coleridge as an very gothic poem. There are several words and lines that make me think of a very dark and evil time. The poem starts out with three young men walking to a wedding when they see an old long grey breaded man. The ancient mariner grabs one of the young men with his skinny hands. The mariner ended up letting the young man go after demanded to do so; however, the young man was fancinated with this man and decided to sit down on a stone and listen to the mariner's story. He tells how he was on this ship when a big storm came and took the ship southward where they ended up getting stuck in ice. When they were stuck they saw an Albatross, which is a symbol of good luck to sailors. However, the Mariner ended up shooting at it and killing it. The other sailors were not happy about this. They were stuck with nothing to eat nor drink and blamed the ancient mariner for this and in result, they ended up hanging dead Albatross around the mariner's neck. The mariner ended up seeing a ship in the far distance, but his mouth was so dry that he could not speak. Therefore, he bit his arm and drank his blood to moisten his mouth for him to call out to the ship. This is only the beginning of the mariner's story and everyone can already tell how this poem illustrates a gothic time. There is nothing happy or joyful in the tone or mood of this poem whatsoever. There are words like grey, storm, blood, and cry that accentuates a very dark and gothic poem.
